Narooma Wagonga Inlet
Wagonga Inlet is situated north and west of the township of
Narooma, in the Eurobodalla Shire. The Inlet is classified as
a drowned river valley estuary and extends about 9km upstream of
the ocean. Wagonga Inlet has a relatively small, steep
catchment with low freshwater inflows, and as the water of the
inlet is not much different to seawater, a wide range and abundance
of marine life is found. There are extensive seagrass beds
and fish nursery areas in Wagonga Inlet and it is one of only two
estuaries on the South Coast of NSW that contains large beds of
Posidonia australis (strapweed), a seagrass that is very
sensitive to habitat changes.
Wagonga Inlet is permanently open to the ocean with twin
breakwaters extending seaward and training walls lining the
entrance below the Princes Highway Bridge. The ocean entrance
conditions, particularly the entrance bar, is an issue of concern
to recreational and commercial boat users.
