Council launches ‘Dig it, Eat it’ calendar
Eurobodalla Shire Council made the most of the festivities at
Broulee Primary School's Fete to promote its message of sustainable
eating last Thursday when Councillor Alan Morton launched the 2010
Eurobodalla Environmental Calendar.
The calendar, this year titled 'Dig it, Eat
it', has been produced annually since 1998
and is illustrated by 14 artworks produced by students across the
Shire.
Councillor Morton said the calendar aimed to grow students'
awareness of environmentally-responsible eating and was the
culmination of an environmental education program run by Council
with local schools.
Eurobodalla Shire Council's Environment Education Officer,
Bernadette Davis, said Council visited schools to raise an
awareness of sustainable eating among students. "The growing,
cooking and eating of food is at the centre of so much human
endeavour, yet many school children think that food comes from the
supermarket," she said.
"We visited each school and taught them more about what
'organic' means, how they can build a chook pen and collect their
own eggs and grow their own veggies, and why it's good to compost.
We also discussed why bees are important and how they can cook
something delicious from food they grow."
Ms Davis said Council then invited the students to interpret the
theme in an artwork competition for the Environmental Calendar.
"Over 500 entries were submitted and the winning illustrations are
featured on the calendar which we'll distribute to every school,"
she said.
The winners are:
Narooma Primary: Julie Brown
St Bernard's Primary: Drew-Ellyn Cooke and Alana Price
Sunshine Bay Primary: Aisha Roman
Mogo Primary: Brooke Crothers
St Marys Primary: Aimee Mehl
Batemans Bay Primary: Eady Jarman and Bailie Doran
Broulee Primary: Hallie Staunton
St Peters Anglican College: Abby Taylor and Georgia Sweeney
Bodalla Primary: Aidan MacNamara
Central Tilba Primary: Meg Hawken
Moruya Primary: Pearl Mitchell
Over the next week 7000 copies of the Dig it, Eat
it calendar will also be made available to members of
the community from the three Shire libraries, Council's
administration building in Moruya, the Visitor Centres in Batemans
Bay, Moruya and Narooma and at the Mogo Book Store.
Ms Davis said Council's environmental education team also took
its water catchment model to the Broulee Primary School fete along
had a weed identification display.
