EUROBODALLA COMMUNITY-BASED HERITAGE STUDY

Eurobodalla residents are being invited to take part in a Community Based Heritage Study to be conducted by Council's Heritage Advisor Pip Giovanelli with the enthusiastic help of the Heritage Advisory Committee. The project is jointly funded by the Council and the NSW Heritage Branch of the Department of Planning.

What is a Community-based heritage Study?

A Community Based Heritage Study involves careful consideration of the cultural heritage significance of places or items of importance to the story of a Local Government Area (LGA).  A suitably qualified heritage professional works with the community to identify these places and assess their significance.

It has been twelve years since the Eurobodalla Shire Council undertook the last heritage study in 1997.  That study formed a solidly researched base of data for the local area, and created a foundation document for future decisions affecting local heritage.  It also recommended which of the assessed items are most suitable for listing in the Heritage Schedule of the Local Environmental Plan.

Heritage is whatever we as a community consider important to save for this and future generations.  So now, a new kind of heritage study is making sure that decisions about heritage items begin with the very people who will benefit from them: THE COMMUNITY.

The aim is to assist the local community to identify places of heritage significance across the Shire and then to assess these items against yardsticks set out by the Burra Charter, using the NSW State Heritage Inventory as a format.  The information will be of great value for planning decisions, tourism and the way that history and heritage are promoted and managed in the area.

The current study will review and update the existing Eurobodalla Shire-wide Heritage Study and prepare a list of heritage places and items valued by the community.

How is the study being funded?

Council was successful in applying for funding from the NSW State Government, under the Local Government Heritage Management Program.  This program is run through the Heritage Branch of NSW Department of Planning.  Council has received $12,300 in $ or $ funding.  This gives the project a budget of $24,600 and is dependent on project completion within a 2 year timeframe.

Who will conduct the Study?

As part of the heritage study, Council's Heritage Advisor Pip Giovanelli and the Heritage Advisory Committee will establish a working group of community members.  This is a great opportunity to be actively involved in heritage management in the Eurobodalla local government area.  Council is looking for community members with a genuine interest and experience or training in heritage matters would be of great assistance to the project.
