Tuesday 2 July 2019
Eurobodalla residents are being encouraged to help celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at two local events for NAIDOC Week next week.
On Monday 8 July Council will host its annual NAIDOC Week flag raising ceremony at the Council Chambers, corner of Vulcan and Campbell Streets Moruya, from 10.30am to 12pm.
The ceremony will include a Welcome to Country, traditional smoking ceremony, traditional dance performance and free morning tea.
On Tuesday 9 July the popular annual NAIDOC Week Family Fun Day will be held at Moruya's Riverside Park.
Organised by the Eurobodalla Koori Employment Network, the event will feature free fun activities including live music, a large range of information stalls, entertainment, traditional games, a free sausage sizzle, craft, volleyball, putt putt golf, and more.
Other events on during NAIDOC Week include a Koori Booris playgroup in Batemans Bay on Wednesday 10 July, a youth sports day at Moruya Showground on Thursday 11 July, an elders luncheon in Batemans Bay on Friday 12 July, and the NAIDOC Awards Ball in Batemans Bay on Saturday 13 July.
Council’s community development coordinator Zoe Morgan encouraged Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community members to get involved in the week.
“This year’s NAIDOC Week theme is ‘Voice. Treaty. Truth.’ in which we’re encouraged to work together for a shared future,” he said.
“NAIDOC Week is the perfect opportunity for Australians from all walks of life to come together and celebrate and support our local Aboriginal community.”
