Making plans for the heart of Narooma
Monday 29 April 2019
Planning to set the future direction for the open spaces in the heart of Narooma is underway.
New planning will guide the development and management of a large swathe of Narooma’s public land, including the Bill Smyth and NATA ovals, the Wagonga Inlet foreshore, Ken Rose Park, and the leisure and swimming centres.
Eurobodalla Shire Mayor Liz Innes said the plans were a terrific opportunity for residents to guide the future of their town.
“By mapping out tourism, sport and recreation goals for Narooma, we can prioritise future infrastructure and attract development funding,” she said.
Clr Innes said Council obtained funding from the Australian Government’s Building Better Regions Fund to develop the plans, which would be used to identify opportunities to stimulate economic activity and bring life to the foreshore.
A masterplan will be prepared to outline the precinct’s future direction, while specific sports-facilities plans will identify future use and facilities for recreational areas.
Council’s manager of recreation Mark Upson said sporting groups in the area would be glad to see much-called-for planning underway, particularly at Bill Smyth Oval.
“We’ve engaged consultants to begin planning based on information Council has already received from the community,” he said.
“Now we’re meeting with identified stakeholders, like user-groups and licensees, to develop illustrated concept plans for the precinct’s different sports facilities, before going back to the broader community.”
The Narooma Foreshore and Sport and Leisure Precinct project includes: a masterplan to guide the future development of the area to stimulate economic activity; a suite of concept plans that illustrate the proposed landscape and infrastructure for different areas within the precinct; and an updated plan of management – a mandatory tool used to manage Crown land.
