Mayor calls for bipartisan support for highways, water

Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes has welcomed the Australian Government’s commitment for major upgrades to the Princes and Kings Highways and is calling on the opposition to match the funding.
The federal Liberals and Nationals on Monday announced they would commit $500 million to upgrade the NSW section of the Princes Highway, from Wollongong to the Victorian border, as well as an additional $30 million for upgrades to the Kings Highway.
It comes on top of the $960 million extra funding announced for the Princes Highway by the NSW Government in March.
“This is about saving lives and we’re calling on bipartisan support from both sides of the federal government to allocate the funding and get on with the job,” Clr Innes said.
“The NSW Government is driving billions of dollars of investment in our state’s road networks. We just want the Australian Government to do its bit to fix our highways, which are the life-blood of our regional communities.
“We also want our truckies, who are the lifeline to regional communities such as ours, to have a safe work environment so they can help local businesses move basic goods and services safely and more efficiently.”
Clr Innes is also calling for bipartisan support from federal election candidates to fund critical water infrastructure for the Eurobodalla region.
The Council has already invested $3.5 million to progress the detailed design of its proposed $100 million second water storage facility in the south of the shire.
“Ensuring water security is fundamental to the growth and wellbeing of our regional community,” Clr Innes said.
“Council has shown leadership by getting this project shovel ready, and the NSW Government has again been fantastic in helping us apply to the Australian Government for an equal share to fund this $100 million project.
“We’re calling on support from all candidates in the Eden Monaro and Gilmore electorates to fund this critical infrastructure project for our region.
“There are so many exciting opportunities awaiting Eurobodalla and if we work in partnership we can achieve some amazing things, leaving a legacy that will see our community prosper for decades to come.”
