Public art should get people thinking and talking – engaging with art and place through analysis and imagination says Kathy Arthur.

The shire’s draft Public Art Strategy is available for public comment until Monday 30 August. Council’s director of community, arts and recreation said the draft strategy supported the important role public art played in a lively and representative cultural identity.

“Public art creates conversations. By enlivening our community spaces, people remember not just the art but Eurobodalla as well,” Ms Arthur said.

“The strategy reflects our commitment to the planning and inclusion of art in public, community and commercial projects: it provides the framework for the development and maintenance of public art in the shire.”

Ms Arthur said Council had been the lucky recipient of a significant number of high-profile, large-scale public art in recent years.

“Eurobodalla has a strong community working in the public art space. Our job is to make sure the acceptance and placement of these gifts is meaningful and relevant to the community, and they remain safe and well-maintained into the future,” she said.

“The document also serves as a resource for artists, consultants and community groups – supporting our local creatives and creative industries by providing a clear framework to support art destined for the public arena.”

The draft Public Art Strategy was prepared against a background review of public art in the shire and an assessment of current trends, and included an extensive consultation process with stakeholders, the Public Art Advisory Committee, and a broad range of community groups.
