Permits, approvals and public health

When starting or adapting your business, any change of use to land or a building may require approval. Council encourages businesses to make contact to find out if you need a development approval, because some business activities may be exempt.

Council also assists businesses that have a legislative responsibility to minimise risks to public health. Our Public and Environmental Health Team undertakes regular inspections of businesses where there are risks to public health, and ensures that operators are aware of their responsibilities.

Development approval for businesses

Liquid trade waste

You need to obtain approval from Council if you intend to conduct a business activity that generates and discharges liquid trade waste.

Food businesses

Find out about setting up a food business, food safety training and food inspections, temporary food stalls at markets and events, and Covid-safe restaurants and cafes.

Skin penetration businesses

The Public Health Regulation 2012 requires operators of skin penetration procedures to be registered with Council and our health officers carry out inspections when needed.

Public pools and spas

Council carries out inspections of public swimming pools and spas to ensure they are operating within legislative requirements.
