PFAS

Starting 14 July 2025, Eurobodalla Council will be testing for PFAS at sites on Moruya's Gundary Oval and nearby street verges.

We are carrying out this voluntary testing following the decommissioning of a fuel station in Campbell Street.

Testing will provide Council with information on the level of PFAS at the sites, if any, and prepare the way for remediation, if required.

Testing

When: Friday 11 July - Friday 25 July 2025

Where:

  • Campbell Street, Moruya
  • Thomas Street, Moruya
  • Gundary Oval (the oval will remain open for use)

Contractor: Senversa (environmental consultants)

Testing will involve:

  • soil sampling with hand tools at some locations
  • installing PVC wells to collect groundwater at other locations

Results:

Results are expected within six weeks of the testing. The community will be advised of the results.

What are PFAS

  • PFAS (per-and-poly-fluoroalkyl substances) are a group of synthetic chemicals developed in the 1950s that are used in many everyday products.
  • PFAS repel oil, stains, and water, so are commonly used in clothing, furniture, make-up, food packaging, non-stick pans, firefighting foam, cleaning products.
  • They are also known as ‘forever chemicals’ as they can persists for thousands of years to break down.
  • There are many different forms of PFAS and at high concentrations they can lead to potential health problems.
  • The presence of PFAS in the environment does not necessarily pose a risk to human health or the environment.
