Estuaries
Estuaries are coastal water bodies where freshwater from rivers and streams meets saltwater from the ocean.
Eurobodalla’s estuaries are among our most valuable natural assets. They support diverse ecosystems such as mangroves, saltmarshes, seagrasses, and sandy shoals. These habitats filter nutrients, trap sediment, and help keep our coastal waters clean and healthy.
Our estuaries are also highly productive environments that provide breeding, nursery, and feeding areas for fish, birds, and other wildlife. They are vital to our region’s biodiversity, recreation, and way of life.
Estuarine Coastal Management Program
Our Estuarine Coastal Management Program works to protect and improve the health of Eurobodalla's estuaries and their surrounding wetlands. Through this program, we aim to:
- manage risks from coastal hazards such as coastal erosion
- restore degraded habitats next to estuaries
- improve water and ecosystem health across our estuaries
- support community access so everyone can enjoy these natural spaces safely.
Policies and reports
Council manages and monitors estuarine environments through ongoing policies and reporting:
