Clyde River Estuary
Clyde River Estuary is a vital part of Eurobodalla’s coastline, rich in natural beauty and biodiversity. It plays a key role in supporting local recreation, the economy, and cultural heritage. It also offers important environmental benefits to our community.
About the Clyde River Estuary
The Clyde River, known as Bhundu by the Walbunja people of the Yuin Nation, flows from the Budawang Range to Batemans Bay before meeting the Tasman Sea. The estuary features tidal creeks, mangroves, seagrass beds and saltmarshes - critical habitats for fish, birds and other native wildlife.
This important waterway provides:
- clean water and healthy habitats for native species
- great places for fishing, boating and kayaking
- cultural and historical value for the local community
- a boost to local tourism and the economy.
Why estuary health matters
Healthy estuaries:
- protect water quality
- support local industries and recreational activities
- help reduce the impacts of flooding and climate change.
Council works with local communities, landholders, and state agencies to manage and protect these waterways for future generations.
Clyde River Estuary Management Plan
Clyde River Estuary Study and Plan covers the tidal sections of the Clyde River, from Batemans Bay upstream to Shallow Crossing. The surrounding catchment includes forests, farmland, and towns, which influence estuary health.
Council developed the plan to guide how we manage the waterways, foreshores and catchments of the estuary. The plan aims to:
- maintain the high water quality standards of Batemans Bay and the Clyde River
- protect and enhance ecological communities and habitats
- support safe and sustainable recreation and commercial use
- engage the community in estuary care
- address coastal hazards ocean impacts in development planning.
