Take a playdate with emergency services

Published: 6 October 2023

Families need to take decisive action when facing natural disasters like bushfires and floods, but decisions can be complicated – it’s not usually so simple as grabbing the kids and leaving early. Throw evacuation centres into the mix and keeping children safe, healthy and hydrated can be overwhelming for parents.

Eurobodalla Council’s coordinator of children’s services Louise Hatton said, following the 2019-20 fires, some parents felt rushed evacuations meant they left home without packing the things they really needed, and that children are often still apprehensive around emergency services personnel, flashing lights, and during practice drills.

“Since the fires and floods, our team has reflected on our experiences working with families and how we can help them better prepare,” Ms Hatton said.

“Council does not lead during a disaster – professionals like the RFS and SES are tasked with that - but we do have an extensive network and good communication channels.”

Now the children’s services team is inviting kids and their families to a playdate with a difference; where families can meet with disaster experts and hear first-hand vital need-to-know information.

“It’s also a chance for children to meet emergency personnel in a relaxed setting, supported by family, with plenty of time to adjust to flashing lights and sirens, and have some fun with the trucks and equipment up close,” Ms Hatton said.

“It’s a bit innovative – instead of taking kids to the services, we’re bringing services to the kids – but it’s a response to needs identified by research and to our own knowledge that children learn best through play.”

Participating agencies include SES, Police, Fire and Rescue, RFS, Ambulance, Marine Rescue, Australian Breastfeeding Association and Red Cross. Playdates will be held at Longbeach, Broulee, Nelligen, Moruya, Batehaven and Narooma between 12 October and 9 November.
