Sleighing Christmas holiday waste woes

Published: 23 December 2023

Eurobodalla Council’s rapid response team will be back in action this Christmas, keeping holiday rubbish in check and public toilets clean.

General Manager Warwick Winn wants visitors, residents and businesses to rest assured toilets will be clean and garbage bins emptied over the busy summer holidays.

“We’ve engaged our contract cleaners to provide extra services, and for the very high demand time over Christmas and New Year we’ll have even more bins and an extra pickup at the popular tourist spots,” he said.

“Again we’ll have Council staff out and about across the shire keeping an eye on things; checking bins don’t overflow, toilets are open and in good order, and acting as a point of contact with the public.

“This is the approach we took over the Australia Day and Easter holidays and it worked very well.”

High-use public toilets in Batemans Bay, Mogo, Moruya and Narooma will be cleaned three times each day instead of twice. Outside these additional scheduled services, the rapid response team will be on call for any issues as they arise.

Mr Winn acknowledged Eurobodalla’s public toilets are an ongoing issue.

“Many are old and outdated. Longer term, they require more than good cleaning. We finalised Eurobodalla’s public toilet strategy in June and work to improve the 67 council-maintained public toilets is well underway.”
