New work to protect Long Beach is starting soon
Published: 5 August 2025
We’re gearing up to start coastal protection works at the eastern end of Long Beach.
Our crew will be on site next week to set up and bring in the equipment and materials needed to start building the rock revetment.
This is a major project for the area and an important step in protecting the coastline. While it’s great progress, it will bring some changes and disruptions over the next few months while work is underway.
You’ll find details about the revetment below, but first, here’s a quick overview of what’s happening.
What to expect while we build the rock revetment
Site set up
- We’ll start by setting up storage areas for equipment, materials and site sheds on the foreshore reserve between Fauna Avenue and Long Beach Road.
- Temporary beach access will be created for construction machinery.
- The large sandbags will be moved around to help protect the site during work.
- Helping to protect the Norfolk pines will be a priority from the get-go.
Construction work
- The revetment will be built in sections to reduce disruption and better manage coastal conditions.
- Each section involves digging out sand, laying geotextile fabric, placing rocks, and then restoring the site.
- Rock deliveries will continue throughout most of the project.
- Before work finishes the sand from the sandbags and stockpiles will be returned to the beach.
- All work will follow the consultant’s design and environmental recommendations.
Access and safety
- There will be increased noise in the area and truck traffic along the roads. Please take extra care near the work sites and when travelling through the area.
- Access to the beach and foreshore reserve will be limited and may change as work progresses. Please look out for signs and follow any directions from workers.
- Bay Road access beyond Fauna Avenue will remain open to residents only.
Work hours
Most work will happen on weekdays between 7am and 5pm. Occasionally, we might need to work outside these hours due to tides or weather. If that happens, we’ll do our best to keep disruptions to a minimum.
We know the work might cause some inconvenience, but it’s all for a good cause. This project will help stabilise the shoreline and protect Bay Road from erosion for years to come.
About the rock revetment
The revetment will be built using large, hard-wearing igneous rocks arranged to slope from the beach up toward Bay Road. It will follow the natural curve of the shoreline for about 250 metres – starting near Fauna Avenue and extending past the cul-de-sac.
This image shows how it’s expected to look.
- The base of the structure will be buried under the sand.
- The middle layer of rock will remain mostly visible depending on the natural movement of sand.
- The top layer will be planted with coastal vegetation to support stabilisation and blend into the landscape.
The revetment has been designed to:
- absorb and disperse wave energy to reduce erosion
- maintain pedestrian access along both the beach and Bay Road
- allow for future extension to the west, depending on need and funding.
This diagram shows where the revetment will be built.
Project funding
This project is part of the broader Batemans Bay coastal protection works funded by the NSW and Commonwealth governments. Their support has made this project possible.
