With North Head Drive currently closed, we're making great progress tackling the steep embankment. We're carting material to Guerilla Bay to help widen the road shoulder along George Bass Drive. For traffic information, visit Live Traffic NSW.

Project details

North Head Drive is one of Eurobodalla’s busiest roads, with more than 4,000 vehicles using it every day. It forms a key part of the coastal route connecting Batemans Bay and Moruya. It also serves as the primary access to Moruya Airport, following the scenic course of the Moruya River.

A section of the road runs beneath a steep cliff that is prone to rockfalls, creating safety risks and causing traffic disruptions.

To improve safety and ensure more reliable access, we’re undertaking slope stabilisation works along this section of the road.

We are working to:

  • stabilise the cliff face
  • widen the road
  • install drainage infrastructure.

Benefits to the community:

  • safer conditions for road users and cyclists
  • more reliable access for everyday travel and emergency services
  • fewer road closures due to rockfalls
  • greater resilience during natural disasters
  • reduced risk of sediment runoff into the Moruya River.

Environmental impacts:

We’ve prepared a Review of Environmental Factors to assess potential impacts related to the project's activities.

Project updates

2025

  • We set up the site and started work in July. Not long after, we discovered that the rock needing to be removed made it unsafe to keep the road below open. To keep everyone safe, we decided to fully close this section of the road to all traffic - including vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians - for the duration of the work.
  • In the first half of the year, we worked on the project design, as well as the investigations and assessments needed for the project.
  • We’ve arranged to transport the excavated material to an alternative site, where it will be repurposed for a road safety improvement project. The material will be used to widen the road shoulder along George Bass Drive, near the intersection with Burri Point Road in Guerilla Bay.

2023

  • In August, we received a grant to improve the site through the Infrastructure Betterment Fund.

2022

  • In June, disaster funding to repair the site was approved by Australian and NSW governments.
