South Moruya roundabout

Project: Construction of a roundabout on the Princes Highway, south of Moruya.

Timeframe: 2025 to 2026

Status: In progress

Cost and funding: $4 million from the Australian Government’s Housing Support Program – Community Enabling Infrastructure Stream

Latest news: July 2026

Safety barriers are guiding traffic along the Princes Highway past the TAFE with minimal disruption allowing construction to take place on both sides of the road. We've been installing water and sewerage pipes and stormwater infrastructure.

Project details

We are working to:

  • design and build a four-leg roundabout on the Princes Highway to provide access to future housing developments in Moruya, the new Eurobodalla Emergency Services Precinct, and the Moruya TAFE campus
  • construct islands and paths within the roundabout to assist pedestrians and cyclists crossing the road
  • relocate underground services
  • install lighting at the intersection.

We have prepared a draft plan for the roundabout.

Benefits to the community:

  • safe access to key developments in the area
  • improved road safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
  • improved traffic flow.

Environmental impacts:

We’ve prepared a Review of Environmental Factors to assess potential impacts related to the project's activities.

Background and purpose

The Moruya housing infrastructure project has been underway since April 2023, providing critical infrastructure to support the development of around 1,000 homes in areas already zoned residential in Moruya.

As part of this project, Council’s traffic report confirmed that a roundabout would be required on the Princes Highway to enable safe and efficient access to the South Moruya development area and the Eurobodalla Emergency Services Precinct. The analysis showed that the proposed roundabout would perform optimally under traffic now and into the future.

This roundabout is separate from the one the NSW Government is building at the entrance to the new hospital. Once completed the two roundabouts will be close together, but they are both needed to support a growing community.

Project updates

2026

  • Work continued on either side of the highway, installing stormwater, water and sewerage infrastructure.
  • In late April we set up barriers and applied line marking on the Princes Highway to allow traffic to flow through the roundabout worksite.
  • We scheduled the work to set up safety barriers for after Anzac Day to allow construction to be safely carried out on either side of the Princes Highway for the next few months.
  • In April we started work to build the new road alongside the TAFE.
  • We started setting up work sites either side of the highway in March.
  • Work started in January on the new road alongside the Essential Energy station in preparation for the new roundabout.

2025

  • We continued finalising the design for the new roundabout and obtaining approvals from relevant government departments throughout the year.
  • The Australian Government announced the funding for the project in January 2025.

2024

  • Our design team worked on the preliminary detail design for the intersection.
  • We conducted initial checks at the site to assess environmental and heritage factors.
  • We confirmed the design requirements and Works Authorisation Deed approval processes from Transport for NSW.
  • We consulted with adjoining stakeholders including Essential Energy and TAFE NSW.
