Our contractors have set up in the foreshore reserve at the north end of Tuross Boulevard. They'll be there most of the year, upgrading the first of ten pumping stations.

Project details

We are working to:

  • upgrade the aging sewerage infrastructure for efficient transfer to the treatment plant.

Benefits to the community:

  • meeting the needs of the growing population
  • reduced risk of potential discharges into local waterways
  • enhanced service reliability and resilience
  • improved visual aesthetics.

Background and purpose

The Tuross Sewerage Scheme is an essential network comprising pipes, pumping stations, and treatment facilities that serve the local community.

To accommodate the growing population and protect the surrounding waterways, we are upgrading these facilities. We need to increase the capacity and improve infrastructure to reduce the risk of overflows during peak seasons and heavy rainfall.

We have already renewed many of the local sewer mains by relining the pipes, reducing leaks and infiltration. In 2022, we upgraded the Tuross Sewage Treatment Plant on the northern side of Coila Lake. Now, in 2024, we have turned our attention to the pumping stations.

The pumping stations are strategically positioned in low-lying areas to receive sewage via gravity and then pump to the treatment plant. It’s important that the stations operate efficiently because they are close to waterways such as Coila Lake and the Tuross River.

All ten stations need mechanical and electrical upgrades to ensure the system remains safe and reliable. We’ll install new pumps, odour control units and improve overall functionality. We’ll also provide additional storage to minimise the risk of untreated sewage entering the local environment in emergency situations.

We begin the upgrade process with TU01, the most critical station, acting as the final pump before reaching the treatment plant. It’s in the reserve next to Coila Lake at the northern end of Tuross Boulevard. This upgrade includes constructing a hardwood-clad building to house the facilities. We’ll also install a standby generator so we can keep the system operating during power outages.

Over the next few years, we will upgrade each of the stations. These improvements will strengthen the network's resilience and contribute to the preservation of local waterways.
